Vibration Damping in Pumps – Anti-Vibration Mounts

Vibration will exist in all pumps and indeed all rotating machines. These pumps and other rotating machines produce vibrations in horizontal and vertical planes and also exert centrifugal and torsional vibrations. All these vibrations are avoidable by designing proper Anti-Vibration Mounts for mounting these pumps and other rotating machinery. Pump designers (and motor designers) design machines to withstand normal vibration limits. These vibration isolation limits vary by pump type, mounting configuration, power requirements, rotative speed and fluid being pumped. Even these vibration limits are sometimes very high considering the other machinery to be placed in the vicinity and thus Anti-Vibration Mounts are required for mounting these pumps. Excessive vibration in pumps may lead to excessive noise, equipment damage, and premature pump failure due to fatigue.

Main causes of Pump Vibration:

★ Misapplication, design, or manufacturing defect causing vibrations in Pumps.
★ Corrosion and erosion – Damage from corrosion or erosion may damage impellers or rings, leading to a machine which vibrates beyond acceptable limits.
★ Imbalance of the Impeller – Impellers should be trimmed and dynamically balanced to the proper diameter at the maximum operating speed. Initial failure to balance the impeller on an existing pump may well cause vibration outside of acceptable areas.
★ Imbalance of motor rotating element – This is a rare manufacturing flaw.
★ Coupling out of balance.
★ Incorrect rotation – While pumps will pump when rotating in the wrong direction, flow and head will be reduced and vibration due to fluid dynamics may result.
★ Bent shaft – A bent shaft may be caused by a number of field related issues and will result in vibration.
★ Bearing wear / failure – Lack of lubrication or improper lubrication may hasten bearing wear and cause vibration.
★ Pipe strain (misalignment between the pump and the piping) – Pipe strain is the number one cause of vibration issues in pumps.
★ Poor foundation or anchoring – If the pump’s foundation is not flat or the baseplate not properly secured or grouted, vibration will be increased. The pump may be mounted on Anti-Vibration mounts to reduce the overall vibration levels being transmitted onto the base plate.

CYMAATICS Vibration Isolation Table (VIT) is mainly used in Laboratories as Work Station for PASSIVE VIBRATION ISOLATION for sensitive equipment like Metrology equipments , Laser, Analytical Balances, Optics, Optical and Electronic Scales, Medical Equipment and measuring instruments. These precision Vibration Isolation Tables or VITs are also used in Metrology Rooms / Laboratories for measurements of very precise components like roundness testers, contour measuring machines, gear measuring machines, surface measuring machines, etc. The top working surface of Vibration Isolation Table (VIT) can have very precise granite top working surface conforming to Grade ‘II” or Grade ‘I” or Grade ‘0’ flatness accuracy as per DIN – 876 or any other Customer specified surface flatness accuracy.
