Anti-Vibration Pads for Damping Vibrations in Industrial Heavy-Duty Compressors

Compressors generate vibrations and these vibrations damage the internal parts, bearing, gears and shafts of the Compressors. A large compressor mounted on a factory rooftop can create massive vibrations during intermittent start-ups and stops. We supply Anti Vibration Pads to Air Compressor manufacturers. While you can reduce vibrations in these machines by following proper maintenance schedules, the truth is that eventually when the machine (compressor) gets older, the maintenance costs and maintenance downtime increases. In this case, vibrations are not totally UN-avoidable. The machines will vibrate. But what can be easily accomplished is mounting the machine on new Anti Vibration Pads. The Anti Vibration Pads are made from vibration absorbing materials like springs, rubber or air. The major advantage of these Anti Vibration Pads is that while they do not stop the actual vibrations inside the machine, they can effectively isolate all vibrations being produced by the machine. In other words, the vibrations produced by the machine are not transmitted beyond the Anti Vibration Pads.

CYMAATICS Design – Some Common Types of Vibrations in Compressors

The two predominant types of vibrations in Compressors are Lateral and Rotational (twisting) vibrations. In Lateral Vibration, the whole compressor moves in the x-y-z domains i.e. up-down, left-right sideways and front-back movements. An example of the lateral vibration is the excessive ringing/movement of external piping due to resonance. When the vibration of external piping becomes excessive, it is almost certainly because some vibration within the compressor system is occurring at a frequency near the natural frequency of the piping structure.

Rotational vibration occurs from within the compressor system due to unbalanced rotating loads. A common occurrence of rotational vibration is an extreme vibration along the crankshaft whose frequency is the same as shaft speed. This type of rotational vibration is usually due to unbalance forces acting on the crankshaft caused by unequal weights in piston pairs. Both the Lateral and Rotational vibrations can be easily controlled and damped by our Anti vibration pads specially designed for this purpose. The design of traditional Anti vibration pads only isolates the up-down vibration or at max one degree of x-y vibration. But in our Anti vibration pads the complete 360 degrees vibration isolation in the x-y plane is possible along with controlling vertical vibration and more importantly isolating rotational vibrations.

Every system has one or more natural frequencies of vibration. If an excitation occurs at one of these frequencies, a structural system will tend to ring and move excessively. Existing vibration levels will be exaggerated and damage to the machinery will occur at an accelerated rate. in case of resonance of one part of your air compressor machinery structure, there are several steps you can take to correct this condition.

Some Important Steps to Control Vibration in Compressors:

1. Be sure the Anti vibration pads and other anchoring hardware are properly torqued. Loose mountings often cause general looseness that mimics resonance.
2. Check the Anti vibration pads by checking the creep developed in them. This can be easily checked by measuring the height of the Pad while installed and then checking the height again 3-4 hours after removing the Pad from any external pressures. The Anti vibration pads should return back to within 95% of it’s original uncompressed height.
3. Vary the operating speed of the unit to change the frequencies of the exciting force(s). The Anti vibration pads will typically have resonance frequencies near the 8Hz-12Hz range, therefore system frequencies must be kept away from these resonant frequencies.
4. Add weight to the compressor structure that is resonating. Changing the mass of the structure changes its natural frequencies.
5. Vibration in pipes may also be cured by adding rubber-bush bracing and AntiVibrating Hangers.
